Porta del morto
Porticina murata con arco a tutto sesto identificabile come porta del morto. Rialzate rispetto al livello della strada, le porte del morto erano probabilmente utilizzate per facilitare l’uscita delle bare dei defunti. Questo elemento, riscontrabile nelle abitazioni medievali di molti borghi italiani, potrebbe avere origini ancora più antiche. Nelle tombe etrusche, infatti, accanto all’ingresso principale era spesso disegnata o scolpita una finta porta, varco percorribile solo dagli spiriti delle persone scomparse.
Solcara
Antica fognatura a cielo aperto in uso in epoca medievale. Scende inclinata dalla zona più alta, dove si trovava la rocca, per defluire all’esterno delle mura di cinta. La presenza di due solcare nel centro storico di Serra Sant’Abbondio testimonia l’invariata conformazione dell’abitato nel tempo.

On top of this small, bricked up door there is a round arch identifiable as the “dead man door”, porta del morto. This kind of door was raised above the normal ground level, as they were most likely used as a way to ease the coffins out of the buildings. This typical medieval element was common in many italian towns, but it might have a more ancient origin. In Etruscan graves, indeed, it was common to find a fake door, either painted or carved in stone: it was a breach for the souls of those who had died.
Solcara
It is an ancient open sewer used during the medieval times. The solcara goes down from the highest point, where the fortress was, and it drains out of the city walls. The presence of two solcare testifies how the layout of the town hasn’t changed in time.
